A third configuration, requested by Eugene Ormandy in 1954, combines elements of both suite and ballet. Times provides a concise summary of the storyline in its transitions between the choreographed sequences stating: "Appalachian Spring" premiered on October 30th, 1944, and was a tremendous success. Also known as Ballet for Martha, Copland wrote Appalachian Spring for choreographer Martha Graham in 1944, later winning a Pulitzer Prize for the work in 1945. Among the central characters are a bride, a groom, a pioneer woman, a preacher and his congregation.

This is the premier recording of Appalachian Spring, dating from 1945, the year following the ballet's first performance. Menotti was the first composer ever to win the award twice, in 1950 for his opera The Consul and in 1955 for another opera, The Saint of Bleeker Street.
