In Roberts' day few persons journeyed much beyond their home town. David signed up with Christine Isteed at Artist Partners in 1995 and finally realised his dream of becoming a children’s book illustrator when his first book, ‘Frankie Stein’s Robot’, written by Roy Apps was published in 1998. Prior to becoming a full-time writer in 2000, Roberts worked for some thirty years as a book editor at distinguished publishing houses like Chatto and Windus, an editorial director at Weidenfeld & Nicolson and a partner of Michael O’Mara Books.
