Yu Hong leaves her home village and starts university in Beijing, where she develops a consuming and compulsive relationship with another student.

The hyperreal style of handheld camera and jump cuts feel at home in late 80's Beijing while the cautious lingering of Purple Butterfly left the movie sedated. Finally got around to watching Summer Palace, and my second experience with Lou Ye here was just as exceptional as the first.

First of all, you need a strong narrative drive and sympathetic (or, at the very least, understandable) characters. Lou Ye's sprawling epic Summer Palace follows Yu Hong (Lei Hao), a rebellious young woman from a small Chinese town transplanted to a politically - charged Beijing University in the late 1980s.
