Eliot’s personal life continue to fascinate both his critics and admirers. Valerie Eliot met her future husband in 1949, two years after Eliot’s long-estranged first wife died in a sanatorium. Haigh-Wood met Tom Eliot in or around March 1915 at a dance in London, where he took tea with her and a friend. Eliot is long-remembered for seminal poetry such as “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” “Journey of the Magi,” and “The Wasteland,” married his wife in 1957. A reporter who interviewed her once described Valerie Eliot as Reclusive. It was Eliot’s widow Valerie, who died in 2012 having spent over forty years researching Eliot’s letters and papers, resolved to give a voice to Vivien Eliot. “It was extraordinary,” she told the Observer in 1972.
