L'Arlésienne is a short story, written by Alphonse Daudet and first published in his collection Letters From My Windmill (Lettres de mon moulin) in 1869.. On a commission from Léon Carvalho, the author transformed the story in 1872 into a play in three acts and five tableaux with music and chorus. The incidental music to Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlésienne (usually translated as 'The Girl from Arles') was composed by Georges Bizet for the first performance of the play on 1 October 1872 at the Vaudeville Theatre (now known as the Paramount Theatre).

Music from the L'Arlésienne suites was played extensively in "Hammer Into Anvil", an episode of The Prisoner. The Daudet play was selected by Léon Carvalho who also enlisted Bizet to write the stage music. Sadly it did not turn out well.

Sad short story about two workers walking by a house in town and one recounts to the other the sad love story of a handsome young man who fell in love with a girl from Arles and was going to marry her, until he found out she had been unfaithful. Distraught, he goes mad and kills himself. The original play was based on a short story here read by Fernandel entitled Les Letters de mon moulin. Directed by Marc Allégret. Frédéri is a very handsome young man in love with a girl he met once in Arles (we will never know her name :she is always referred to as "l'Arlésienne" ). With Raimu, Gaby Morlay, Louis Jourdan, Édouard Delmont. It consists of 27 numbers (some only a few bars) for voice, chorus, and small orchestra, ranging from short solos to longer entr'actes.
